Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type
Most travelers fall into two categories:
- L Visa (Tourist): For sightseeing, visiting friends, or private matters.
- M Visa (Business): For trade, commercial activities, or meetings.
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
Before you start the online form, gather these files. Missing one means a rejected application.

Step 3: Complete the COVA Form Online
All applications must now be started online via the China Online Visa Application (COVA) portal. Handwritten forms are no longer accepted.
Crucial Tip: The photo requirements are strict. Ensure your digital photo has a pure white background and your ears are visible. Don't wear a white shirt.
Step 4: Biometrics (Fingerprinting)
As of 2025, most applicants aged 14-70 must submit fingerprints in person at the Visa Application Center.
Exemption: If you are eligible for the new "Digital Pilot" program (select US/EU cities), you may be able to skip the in-person interview.

Standard processing takes 4 working days. Express service (2-3 days) is available for an extra fee (~$25 USD).
